Beginning Monday September 12, get your Sonny & Cher face on, because their classic television shows are back on a weekly basis. getTV announced the return of the duo’s comedy/variety show “The Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour” in a Monday night 8 p.m. ET time slot, but it’s not just about the couple. Throughout the year viewers will see some rare episodes of Cher’s 1975 solo series “Cher”, and the duo’s 1976 reunion series The Sonny & Cher Show”. Check out the video clip posted below and starting singing “I’ve Got You Babe”.
The weekly lineup handpicks some of the best episodes from their first TV effort, “The Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour” and mixes them in with individual installments from “Cher” and the 1976 reunion show, “The Sonny & Cher Show”. Many of these episodes have not been seen on television in over a decade. Think the network is giddy about having Cher on their network? You’d be right and here’s the official statement.
“Last year, getTV brought back Judy Garland to our Monday night variety block. And this year, we believe the only entertainer who can possibly follow her is Cher,” said Jeff Meier, SVP of Programming, getTV. “Cher is a quadruple threat—an icon of music, movies, fashion and TV—relevant across six decades, and we’re thrilled to present this handpicked selection of episodes from across her three variety series, two of them showcasing her unique and endearing relationship with the beloved Sonny Bono. We’re happy to make these shows available again to the legions of fans who first fell in love with Cher while watching them, and to newer generations just now discovering the magic of Cher.”
For some younger viewers, the variety show concept might seem new, but it was a mainstay of broadcast television for decades. Since the episodes date back to the ’70s, with the first show debuting in 1971, guests include headliners of television, music and film from back in the day, like Jean Stapleton, Jimmy Durante, Andy Griffith, Burt Reynolds, Frankie Valli and Merv Griffin. Even Joe Namath gets into the act. While presenting then-current show business greats, “The Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour” introduced some new folks you might have heard of like Steve Martin and Teri Garr.
The 30 shows will begin airing on Monday nights, with replays during the month. Get the full lineup and information about getTV, here. Photo/video credit: getTV, used with permission
