“Last Week Tonight With John Oliver” did a deep dive into the upcoming election in France. How deep? John Oliver ended the segment speaking French, smoking a cigarette as his set was turned into a bistro, complete with wine poured and an accordion player. Yes, the famous Brit had to swallow his pride and appeal to the country’s ego. That comes up at the end of the video clip posted below.
With irony dripping from his mouth, John Oliver admitted that Great Britain and the U.S. wet the bed, so to speak and are looking to the French people to stop the spread of nationalist fever. How did it come to this? First there was “Brexit”, then Trump. Oliver wondered whether or not we can trust France to realize it is the last stand against the tide of anti-immigrant sentiment and religious tolerance.
Trust has nothing to do with it, which Oliver went on to make very clear with video clips of the candidates who might stand a chance to keep Marine Le Pen out of office. That’s when we got the classic “Last Week Tonight” treatment of the choices for French voters, and of course, the gaffes each has made.
Think the GOP presidential hopefuls were a sad lot? They have nothing on the candidates in France, and then there’s Le Pen. One of the most startling clips she starred in was one in which she admitted that all manner of clothing that indicates a religious preference will not be tolerated in the France she believes in. Check out the video and see what you think.
