“Akil the Fugitive Hunter” is nothing you’ve seen before. We’re sure of that because it’s a docu-series that follows a bounty hunter, but incorporates animation to chronicle the journey of what the network calls a “…modern-day superhero, Akil Muhammad”. It debuts tonight on A&E at 10 p.m. with back-to-back episodes to get you immersed in his world.
Check out the action-packed sneak peek clip posted below. Here’s a bit about Muhammad. “Growing up in South Central Los Angeles, Akil saw thugs and gangsters committing crimes with impunity. On the verge of entering into the criminal world himself, he chose to take a different path after losing his best friend to gang violence…Akil has become one of the most successful bounty hunters in California.”
He has stayed true to his mission, which is a simple one: fighting to keep his community safe from gangsters, murderers, rapists and those who seek to hurt innocent people. The animation is used to set up the origin stories of those Muhammad hunts and fuses it with live-action footage of Akil’s mission to apprehend the felons and take them off the streets.
“Akil the Fugitive Hunter” is narrated by actor and activist Wood Harris (The Wire), the 10 episode half-hour series features original animation from influential animator Carl Jones (The Boondocks) and original music from cutting-edge rap artist and producer Ty Dolla $ign, who also serves as executive music producer for the series.
